Now every architectural period runs through a fashionable stage and this can be great for pushing design and developing really creative and long lasting buildings. But it can also leave us with some relics we would rather remove, like a hangover from a bad party or a tattoo we wished we never had.
This blog is really inspired by the InsideOut website and comments that the artist Grayson Perry made regarding the generic design of cedar cladding and flat roofs favoured by the swathe of property developers and construction companies jumping on the bandwagon to produce a production line of almost identical, modernist inspired boxes (I use the term modernist loosely here). All clad in red cedar, all flat roofed and all displaying the qualities of a box Perry warns us to “Beware of the arrival wooden cladding”.
Now this is not to try and insult the competition (as there are a lot of great companies out their producing quality products) but we want to try and ensure that people remain informed before choosing a garden room or office or workshop. Cedar is a fantastic wood with a beautiful aesthetic but when fitted as a tongue and groove profile it tends to look like every other garden room. Flat roofs have lots of benefits as they are cheaper, durable and can give your garden building a more contemporary look and boxes are utilitarian and make the use of every available bit of space.
